Dr. Brad Parkinson, led five, large teams to create GPS. In one of our iconic interviews, Parkinson shared GPS displays of "pathways in the sky," visual plots for pilots to lead planes and crews. Targeting, avoiding obstacles, and attaining destinations is all our primary skill. A picture is worth a thousand words. Leading with language and symbols is less effective than projecting a path. Test pilots guide 747s on efficient paths to save 1600 pounds of fuel and improve safety. Visionary leaders plot steps through the future and lead innovative problem solving to beat obstacles fast.
Parkinson assembled five, highly-skilled teams full of leaders. Each developed team objectives and coordinated individual goals. Cross-functional teams accomplished a short-term mission: to navigate five rockets into a hole in the desert. Yet Parkinson kept visible a longer-term vision: to put navigation into every civilian's hand. This guided every decision.
